Is the Nikon D5100 overpriced in the Philippines?

The price of the D5100 in the US with standard 18-55mm lens kit is around 650 USD. With a foreign exchange rate of 43 pesos / dollar (actually 42.1), it should only set buyers back at 27,950 pesos.

The price at SM is 33,999 pesos, meaning it is overpriced by around 6000 pesos! But if you buy abroad, you may have to pay shipping, and pay customs and you may have to wait and wait for it to arrive! You will receive a tripod (not the best brand of course!) and a 4 Gbytes SD card with your purchase int the Philippines. These addons may have say a 1500 peso value. So the Nikon D5100 is overpriced in the Philippines by around 4500 pesos. Actually you can buy cheap but serviceable tripods and 32 gbytes card at CDRKing.

Therefore, we consider the money well spent, but if Nikon lowers the price, it will be more loved by more Filipinio shutterbugs!

Updates: September 14, 2012: The price of the Nikon D5100 DLSR camera with the 18-55mm standard lens from Amazon is now 646.95 USD.The listed price was 849.00 USD! Actually the prices are also hovering around 500 USD. Expect a significant price drop by December.
