Looking for a spare battery for your D5100?

I bought my Nikon D5100 DSLR camera at SM Store. Unfortunately it has no stock of spare battery. Yet the friendly sales ladies mentioned that Columbia store (which has existed a long time already in the Philippines.

Columbia indeed has the spare battery by Nikon itself but it was expensive, greater than 1000 pesos. I dont want to find myself unable to use the camera when the battery is exhausted when I am on photographic trips, so I bought it. Now I am looking for a spare battery for my Samsung WB150F camera. The information for Nikon battery:

Model EN EL14 Nikon Lithium Iion battery pack
Voltage7.4 volts
Capacity1030 mAh
Energy7.7Wh
The cell is made in Japan, and processed/assembled in Indonesia. Next on the agenda before I go shooting: an inexpensive zoom lens for the DSLR.

What the hell! The battery coverSD card cover is broken!

The plastic cover for SD card of my Nikon D5100 is broken. Upon inspection, I find the plastic too thin and fragile. I will have it fixed by my brother. I always thought that cameras branded with Canon or Nikon are of high quality, high grade materials, and of excellent manufacture. Sadly it is not true in the newer consumer oriented models produced under the cutthroat camera business competition. Revisions:
  • September 14: Ooops, it was actually the SD memory card cover!

Is the Nikon D5100 overpriced in the Philippines?

The price of the D5100 in the US with standard 18-55mm lens kit is around 650 USD. With a foreign exchange rate of 43 pesos / dollar (actually 42.1), it should only set buyers back at 27,950 pesos.

The price at SM is 33,999 pesos, meaning it is overpriced by around 6000 pesos! But if you buy abroad, you may have to pay shipping, and pay customs and you may have to wait and wait for it to arrive! You will receive a tripod (not the best brand of course!) and a 4 Gbytes SD card with your purchase int the Philippines. These addons may have say a 1500 peso value. So the Nikon D5100 is overpriced in the Philippines by around 4500 pesos. Actually you can buy cheap but serviceable tripods and 32 gbytes card at CDRKing.

Therefore, we consider the money well spent, but if Nikon lowers the price, it will be more loved by more Filipinio shutterbugs!

Updates: September 14, 2012: The price of the Nikon D5100 DLSR camera with the 18-55mm standard lens from Amazon is now 646.95 USD.The listed price was 849.00 USD! Actually the prices are also hovering around 500 USD. Expect a significant price drop by December.

Burst mode shooting

Your Nikon D5100 is capable of taking photos in quick succession (four frames/second) without manual intervention. This is much better than pressing the release button manually and repeatedly which is slowed down by human reaction. The camera can do it automatically faster than any human.

Before you do this however, you should check that there is sufficient memory to hold the sequence of photos.

Set the release mode. Press the information icon to display the shooting information, Choose Release Mode from [Image-Quality, Image-Size, Release-Mode, Focus-Mode, AF-Area Mode] by gently pushing navigation ring and set it the shutter release mode [Single-Frame, Continuous, Self-timer, Delayed-Remote, Quick-Remote, Quiet-Response]to Continuous.

Now as long as you press the shutter release button the camera will take photos in quick succession!

WARNINGS: burst mode will not be activated if the Flash is ON, the subject is too dark and is beyond the range of current camera settings!

Welcome!

I recently bought a Nikon D5100 dslr camera. I originally wanted to buy the D3100, but the features of the D5100 are so much more enticing to me, the best one is the articulating viewing screen making it easy to create group/self portraits, and overhead shots.

We will explore more the D5100, and hopefully it will last very long with us, just like our Olympus VG-110.

To be continued....
